The Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe was launched to celebrate collection’s 60th anniversary. It is based on the no-frills style of the 1950s. The Bathyscaphe is named after a manned submarine that was able to dive deeper than any experienced diver of that time. The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is essentially the original dive watch. The 1953 design, featuring the first unidirectional rotating bezel with a diving time scale, became the blueprint for dive watches, making it an icon. Designed for elite combat swimmers in the military, the timepiece was well ahead of its time. With a diameter of 42 mm and featuring a screw-down back, O-ring seal and the first ever automatic movement in a dive watch, the Fifty Fathoms became the first modern dive watch. It was so robust and battle-tested that elite units in various naval forces were kitted out with the watch. Its water resistance of 50 fathoms, which is equivalent to a diving depth of 91 metres, gave the collection its name. Oceanographer Jacques Cousteau was probably the most famous person to sport the Fifty Fathoms, Blancpain’s most popular collection today.

My favourite watch is the Blancpain Villeret Quantième Complet. It is actually a men’s model, but I think the watch with 40 mm diameter looks breathtakingly beautiful on a woman, too. The classic complete calendar with Blancpain’s signature moon phase looks stunning with its simple elegance. Each function on the complete calendar can be adjusted individually using the practically invisible under-lug correctors.

Founded in 1735, Blancpain is the oldest watch brand in the world. The Villeret models have barely been aesthetically altered since the early days of Blancpain, yet they still look very contemporary. They have become a timeless classic that is a dependable accessory for generations.

I particularly like this ZENITH Defy Midnight 36 mm for the watch’s combination of features and unique selling points. Firstly, it has an extraordinary colour gradient on the dial, which is highly attractive. You can easily pair the watch with different colourful straps yourself if you find the steel bracelet version too traditional. Try a suitably black strap on one side and a grey one on the other. It is sure to look amazing! Secondly, this model boasts excellent technical credentials thanks to the ZENITH Elite manufacture movement. Overall, it is excellent value for money given what the timepiece offers.
