IWC Portugieser Automatic 40 – LifestyleIWC Portugieser Automatic 40 – Lifestyle

Large, elegant, and extremely accurate - those were the demands for the first Portuguese wristwatch back in 1939. After over 50 years without the Portuguese line, IWC re-launched this model family in 1993 for their 125th anniversary.

 

Until 2020, predominantly oversized cases were used for the Portuguese family, in line with tradition. However, with the 2020 launch of the Portuguese Automatic 40, featuring a case diameter of just 40mm, a new era began. The reduced size of this model now fits perfectly on smaller wrists. The design that has a clear and uncluttered dial, along with a small seconds sub-dial at 6 o'clock, strongly resembles the vintage IWC reference 325 from the late 1930s.

 

Powered by the robust in-house caliber IW82200 that boasts a power reserve of around 60 hours, this timepiece can be set aside over the weekend and still be ready for use at the start of the new week.

My favourite watch is the Blancpain Villeret Quantième Complet. It is actually a men’s model, but I think the watch with 40 mm diameter looks breathtakingly beautiful on a woman, too. The classic complete calendar with Blancpain’s signature moon phase looks stunning with its simple elegance. Each function on the complete calendar can be adjusted individually using the practically invisible under-lug correctors.

Founded in 1735, Blancpain is the oldest watch brand in the world. The Villeret models have barely been aesthetically altered since the early days of Blancpain, yet they still look very contemporary. They have become a timeless classic that is a dependable accessory for generations.
