Breitling’s legendary pilot’s chronograph – for the journey. In 1952, Willy Breitling developed a chronograph with a circular slide rule that would allow pilots to perform all necessary flight calculations. Two years later, the renowned American association AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) made this model their official timepiece. And so the ‘navigation timer’ – or Navitimer – was born. The AOPA was, and still is, the largest pilots’ club in the world and counts almost every US pilot amongst its ranks. As a de facto pilot’s watch during the heyday of civil aviation, the Navitimer was worn by pilots and aviation enthusiasts alike. It even made it into space on the wrist of astronaut Scott Carpenter in 1962. And pilots were not the only ones drawn to the watch’s irrepressible aesthetics. Celebrities such as Miles Davis and Serge Gainsbourg were also fans, proving that the Navitimer was both stylish and functional. Various models of this Breitling icon have been launched since it debuted 70 years ago, but this new Navitimer captures its classic features while enhancing them with modern refinements. A flattened slide rule and a domed crystal create the illusion of a slimmer profile. Alternating polished and brushed metal elements give a lustrous yet understated finish. Most notably, the new colours in shades of blue, green and copper define the updated dial options. And if there is one update that is sure to spark nostalgia, it is the return of the AOPA wings to their original position at 12 o’clock. For 70 years, the original pilot’s watch has enjoyed great popularity amongst pilots and trendsetters alike.
